Skincare Science: What causes dry skin and how do you treat it?

Dry skin affects many people at different stages in their lives. The causes of dry skin vary; from genetic predisposition; to dehydrating lifestyle factors. Our skin is complex and consists of several dermal layers.

The surface layer, the stratum corneum, consists of dead skin cells fortified with keratin protein. As our skin renews itself, new cells move up from the under layer of the skin to the surface.

Dry skin may be caused by shrinkage of the surface stratum corneum cells; causing cracks and an uneven surface. Dry skin may also be due to unshed dead skin cells; which is why gentle exfoliation is incredibly important.

Dehydrating lifestyle factors affect fluid balance in cells; which is why a holistic approach to skincare is the best approach.

Conditions such as eczema and psoriasis arise due to immune function and complex cell inflammatory processes, but with the right treatment and prevention, symptoms can be minimised:

  1. Use skin fortifying ingredients

There are some highly effective cosmeceuticals are formulated for dry skin. We stock the full Neostrata range, and regularly recommend skincare protocol to patients.

Formulations should be paraben, SLS and soap free as these can all be allergic triggers.

Natural oils, such as coconut oil, sweet almond oil and grape seed oil are all versatile additions to any skincare routine and can be used all over the body. The outside of skin cells are made of lipids (fats) so supplying the skin with healthy fats can help restore the lipid barrier and minimise moisture loss via evaporation.

Antioxidant complexes protect skin cells from free radical damage. Complexes work together, such as Vitamin C & E.

As dry skin is often linked to inflammation; ingredients such as calendula, chamomile, aloe vera and vitamin E can help soothe dry, irritated skin.

  1. Use Gentle Exfoliating ingredients

For a smooth and even complexion, gentle exfoliation is important. Exfoliation should never produce a stinging sensation or leave your skin irritated; this will disrupt the skin’s balance. Use PHAs, Poly-hydroxy-acids, as they are gentle and gently dissolve dead skin and skin pore clogging factors.

  1. Consider a hydrating diet

A diet full of salt, sugar, and refined carbohydrates can disrupt fluid balance and lave the skin looking dull and dry. For radiant skin, diet makes a significant difference. Raw salads and smoothies rich in Vitamin A (beta carotene) C and E all make a difference to skin health.

Healthy fats such as omega 3, 6 and 9 found in foods such as nuts and avocado give your body the fats needed for healthy skin cells.

Potassium rich foods such as leafy vegetables can also help hydration.  Alcohol and coffee also dehydrate the skin, so consider cutting down and switching for herbal detox tea that assist flushing out toxins from your system.

  1. Eliminate triggers

Climate, alcohol consumption, long haul flights, swimming pools and stress are all major triggers for dry skin. It may be worth keeping a diary to isolate your dry skin triggers so you can minimise  them if possible.

  1. Make use of Hydration boosters

For beautiful skin, the Restylane Skinbooster treatment can be beneficial. The Restylane Skinbooster range is specifically designed to provide deep skin hydration and is suitable for all skin types. As we age, the skin loses some of its ability to produce hyaluronic acid. This loss can result in dry, thinning skin with a dull complexion. Restylane skinboosters are innovative dermal fillers that utilise the intrinsic properties of hyaluronic acid, an incredibly “water loving” molecule, to revitalise and deeply hydrate the skin.

At Revivify London we offer this hydrating, radiance boosting treatment which takes place in under an hour with minimal discomfort. The beauty of Restylane Skinboosters is that these fillers can be used for the face, decolletage and the hands; a versatile treatment for radiant skin.
