1. Choose a Broad spectrum formulation
One of the best anti ageing tips is to always wear sunscreen, as reversing sun damage can take many treatments to restore the skin back to its optimum appearance and health.
The most important part of choosing a sun screen is choosing a broad spectrum product and to wear it daily; even throughout winter where there is less sunlight intensity.
UVA and UVB rays from the sun are a form of ultraviolet (UV) radiation; this form of radiation can damage the DNA within cells causing genetic mutations and disrupt the control of cell production.
Photoageing is thought to occur due to UVA radiation damaging the keratinocyte cells of the skin. Keratinocytes are critical to skin renewal and healthy skin. Similarly, UVB rays are responsible for burning and reddening of the skin and affect the superficial epidermis; also playing a role in skin cancer development and photoageing.
2. Choose a water and sweat resistant formulation
If you are active or on holiday, choosing a formulation that is water and sweat resistant is incredibly important to ensuring protection at all times. When many people get sunburnt, it is usually due to not anticipating water washing off sun product.
3. Choose products which offer cosmeceutical benefits
Some of the sunscreen formulations have added cosmeceutical additions, such as antioxidant complexes and skin nourishing oils that work to fortify the skin’s natural defenses.
4. Choose a high SPF formulation
A SPF 15 product blocks about 94% of UVB rays, a SPF 30 product blocks 97% of UVB rays; and an SPF 45 product blocks about 98% of rays. If you have sensitive or fair skin, a high UVA/UVB broad spectrum will be required. Similarly, if you have a family history of skin cancer a high factor is a necessity.
