Botox®  is a brand name for Botulinum Toxin A and  it is the original and the most well-known brand. Botulinum Toxin A is a natural, purified protein that is used to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. Botulinum Toxin A was originally used  in medicine to treat certain conditions but is now widely used both in medicine and for cosmetic reasons. Other leading brand names include:  Dysport® (Azzalure) and Xeomin® (Bocouture). Botox can help excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and overdeveloped muscles such as masseters that can result in a square shaped face, especially in people who grind their teeth at night.

In Aesthetics, the muscle relaxing properties of Botulinum Toxin A are commonly used for skin rejuvenation and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles such as frown lines between the eyebrows ( glabellar lines ). Typically, it may  take 4-10 days for effects to show and  result will last around 3-6 months, however this varies for each individual.

What are dermal fillers and how do they work?

As we age,  our skin loses its natural collagen and elastin and lines and wrinkles start to appear. The skin becomes thinner and hydration decreases and the skin cannot repair itself like before. We also lose fat underneath our skin, consequently losing the youthful plumpness in certain areas such as the cheeks and lips. Our body also  loses some of its ability to make hyaluronic acid as we age leaving skin poorly supported.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that is found in the body, that  plumps and hydrates the skin by attracting water to the tissue.
